Protect Your Teeth as Much as Possible

Hello, dear reader, and welcome back to the Balboa Victory Dental blog! As a dental clinic that serves the Encino area, we want to make sure that all of our neighbors’ teeth are as healthy as possible. While you will hear a lot of talk about the types of food you should avoid, the amount of times that you should brush and floss each day, and how important it is to make sure that you visit your dentist twice a year, we are going to focus on a different subject in today’s post. People, by nature, like to partake in risky activities. These activities, while fun, can pose a great risk to a person’s teeth if they are not careful. Since you only get one set of teeth to work with during a lifetime, we feel it is important that you, at the very least, be aware of the activities that could cause potential harm to your teeth. Keep reading below to learn more.

Have Fun and Be Safe

Outdoor activities are, by and large, something that many people across the nation enjoy. Even with all the technological advancements we have seen in the past few decades, people still enjoy making their way into nature and finding fun activities to get into. Below, we have listed a few of these activities and the ways, potentially, that they could harm your teeth.

  • Hiking: Hiking is one of the most popular outdoor activities out there. Making your way through trails, climbing over obstacles, and taking a moment to appreciate the natural beauty around you is, in our opinion, a great way to spend a weekend. Unfortunately, hiking also carries with it certain risks. If you aren’t careful when hiking, you could take a tumble that carries a real risk of knocking out a few teeth. While we aren’t suggesting that you wear a mouthguard while hiking, we do hope that you will be a little more aware of your foot placement. A little precaution can go a long way in making sure that you don’t accidentally lose a tooth after tripping on a rock or root.
  • Biking: Riding a bike is not only a great form of exercise, it is also a great way to spend your free time. However, biking also carries with it a large risk in relation to your teeth. Even a small tumble on a bicycle can lead to chipping, cracking, or breaking of the teeth. As dentists, we would love it if everyone who rode a bike also wore some sort of tooth protection or a helmet that features a face guard; however, we understand that this desire is something that we will just have to live with. If you are an avid biker, please just be aware of the speed that you are traveling, the surface that you are traveling on, and any and all obstacles around you. With a little caution, you can make sure that you don’t fly over your handlebars in the event of a sudden stop.
